At Heathfield we endeavour to educate our pupils through Art and in Art. The enjoyment of drawing can play a large part in learning in a range of subjects particularly in the early school years.

Art is valued within the School and as such the display of children’s work is given high priority.

We are proud of the high level of work achieved.

Through the teaching of Art we aim to:

  • Develop skills and understanding to enable the child to communicate visually
  • Foster and nurture an enjoyment of creating a piece of artwork for its own sake.
  • Develop and nurture visual awareness and sensitivity to the natural and man made environment

Children are given the opportunity to work in a broad range of 2 and 3 dimensional materials. These activities are grouped into the following areas:

  1. Drawing
  2. Painting
  3. Clay and sculpture
  4. Collage and paper craft
  5. Textiles

Pupils look at examples of and discuss artists’ and designers’ work.

In the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) and Year 1 the class teachers, with support from a teaching assistant, teach Art in their own classrooms.

In Key Stage 2 each child has at least one hour of dedicated Art each week.

Our After-School Art Club gives Junior pupils the opportunity to extend class work, to try out new materials and methods, and to create Art for their own pleasure in an informal mixed age session after School. It gets very busy!
